The title "master planner" suits Mary well. She has a knack for looking at the big picture and distilling the input of many constituents into one coherent story. Perhaps that's one reason Mary was elected to SmithGroupJJR's Board of Directors in 2016. And as a senior principal for planning and design, she has led a broad range of projects for universities, communities and the private sector. Mary is equally at home reconnecting a community to its riverfront or planning an innovative, sustainable campus for cutting-edge research. And naturally, she's inspired by well-planned cities. "I'm inspired by the complexity inherent in human behavior, and in cities as the physical expression of that complexity." When asked where she would spend a week if she had unlimited travel, she would go back to Copenhagen. "Not only is it a compact, dense, pedestrian- and bike-friendly city, it is also rated the happiest city to live in. Who can argue with that?"
