Matt has a background in architecture and building systems, which together, helped him hone in on the niche that really speaks to him: lighting design. "It’s the balance of objective technical aspects and subjective aesthetic aspects that first drew me," he says. "Lighting has a largely unrecognized yet powerful ability to evoke emotion and clarify the way people experience architecture." As a lighting specialist in the Los Angeles office, Matt’s portfolio includes several large corporate, medical and academic facilities. One project that stands out for Matt is the Gallaudet University Sorenson Language and Communications Center, one of the world’s leading institutions for the deaf and hard of hearing. "We identified key lighting criteria for the acutely sensitive deaf optical system, then utilized those criteria throughout the facility," he recalls. "It created an environment that is not only aesthetically beautiful, but also specifically suited for its occupants."
