Simon dreamed of becoming a sculptor or painter until he found the artistry within architecture. "I discovered that I loved the complexity of the challenge," he explains, "and seeing how architecture and planning could be used to improve healthcare delivery." With more than 30 years of experience in healthcare facility planning, programming and design, Simon is one of SmithGroupJJR's leading experts in Lean programming for healthcare and in research for the hospital of the future. He gleans his best data from healthcare facilities themselves. "My most ardent advice to younger architects is to immerse themselves in our client's practice," he says. "Spend half a day in each department to watch what's happening and ask why. You can't solve a client's problems until you understand who they are, what they value and how they do things." Simon's keen observation skills also come in handy in navigating his sail boat, one of his many hobbies.
