If architects relish anything more than a client who appreciates creativity, it's a challenge. The relocation of Babcock & Brown's offices presented SmithGroupJJR with both. Every aspect of the space was carefully planned to create unexpected points of view. Embracing a Zen motif, the team created inspiring yet soothing visuals that marry scenic Golden Gate Bridge views with modern, neutral elements and powerful adornments—a display of full Samurai battle regalia art collection, for example.
The design team also created a powerful program to shift from a traditional hierarchy of perimeter offices to a gradual layering of workspaces. The workplace plan would accommodate expansion and flexibility, too. Curved hallways and rolling ceiling panels enrich the space, while glass-enclosed conference rooms and lounges at the core promote connectivity and interaction.
Driven by the client’s creative spirit, the new headquarters prominently displays the Owner’s museum-quality collection of Japanese and Native American artifacts in a modern and adaptable setting. This helps sustain staff morale and productivity while making a potent impression on clients.
