Initially designed for Phelps Dodge, this Class A, 20-story office tower was built as headquarters for the mining giant who would later merge with Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. When developed, Phelps Dodge executives hoped to reduce long-term occupancy costs, improve collaboration, and accommodate predicted growth in a premier downtown location.
Today, the property—now called One Central Avenue—offers 12 levels of large, flexible floor plates that can accommodate a variety of users on a single floor, a feature more commonly found in suburban low-rise office complexes. The tower offers stunning panoramic mountain views and high-end materials, including granite flooring and copper wall details, grace the plaza-level entrances and lobbies.
Recently, the original tenant moved to another SmithGroupJJR-designed high-rise, providing the design team the opportunity to reposition floors 13-20 for the Phoenix School of Law. SmithGroupJJR transformed the elegant executive office space into an open and collaborative learning center for the private-based educator.
