The Historic Millwork District reflects Dubuque's commitment to preserving its urban legacy while advancing sustainability for community branding and revitalization. SmithGroupJJR, in association with Veenstra & Kimm, developed and implemented an urban design master plan, redesigning 18 blocks as "Complete Streets,” using a $5.6 million TIGER Grant. The project provided an opportunity to transform this former industrial area into a model for sustainable redevelopment. It also serves the needs of IBM employees working in a new downtown service center, supporting a major economic development initiative.
The innovative and progressive sustainable design strategies include the reuse of historic brick pavers, permeable pavement in the alleys and parking areas, and the incorporation of design elements by local artists and craftspeople. The award-winning design sets the stage for future redevelopment, including a dynamic public square in the heart of the District. So while the complete streets of the Millwork District are literally paved with history, they also provide a new route forward for the city.
