“This project has been a labor of love, with so many people, from so many different areas of the hospital, involved in the planning and design of this new tower.”

To address the needs of its growing healthcare operations and to improve the healthcare experience for patient and their families, SmithGroupJJR provided programming, planning, design and engineering for a 232‐bed tower expansion of Emory University Hospital (EUH). The project includes a new underground parking deck, new emergency department, new operating rooms, diagnostic and treatment facilities, new patient and visitor arrival and drop-off zone, an overhead pedestrian bridge connecting the new with the existing hospital, and an integrated energy plant to support the new bed tower and adjacent ambulatory care clinic.

The EUH expansion is phase 1 of a long-term plan to relocate the entire hospital across the street, consolidating hospital operations and freeing up space for additional research facilities. Additionally, it is anticipated that the EUH Expansion Project will be integral to the development of a new gateway to the Emory healthcare precinct. The expansion project will also enable the rolling, interim renovation of several patient units in the existing hospital.

The expansion project has set a new standard as a highly technological facility that will allow EUH to provide the next generation of patient care. From the new ORs to the new, expanded ED and new ICU and med‐surg patient rooms, EUH seeks to achieve the highest levels of patient- and family-centered care. The project is targeting LEED Silver Certification.
