With no centralized location for recreational sports, and the only available fitness facility housed in a small space within a converted dormitory, this public university suffered a real need for a dedicated wellness center.

SmithGroupJJR's team delivered a facility that boasts more than 8,000 square feet of weights and cardio equipment, a 30-foot climbing wall with rappelling station, a NCAA basketball court and three multipurpose exercise rooms. The facility also offers lounge space with video gaming, adding to its fitness function some much needed social space to engage with fellow students, faculty and staff.

The center increased the amount of available recreational sports hours by nine times, impacting usage of fitness and recreation programs by an increase of 58% within the first 12 months of operation. Additionally, the Fitness and Recreation Center is the first such facility at a public university in Texas to be certified LEED Silver.
