Healthcare in the U.S. is experiencing a pronounced urban shift that sometimes parallels larger trends in our cities and sometimes runs counter to these trends. Health systems are migrating from sickness to wellness models, but the built environment is often cited as one of the reasons for chronic illness. Contemporary partnerships and dynamic new models for health-oriented solutions are being rapidly developed in our cities.  The Las Vegas Medical District aims to become a world-class medical district to improve public health outcomes, integrate wellness, accommodate local residents, contribute productively to the economy, and respond contextually to the urban landscape.

The City of Las Vegas emphasizes improved access to healthcare as one of the primary drivers of quality of life in the growth of the city. The Las Vegas Medical District Master Plan encourages a collaborative approach to development of 640 acres directly adjacent to downtown Las Vegas. The Medical District will be an engine of economic growth in the healthcare sector, bringing together businesses, research organizations and corporations to generate $3.6 billion of combined economic impact by 2030.

Las Vegas Medical District

A spur to development in the Medical District is the planned University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Medicine. UNLV plans to create a full, four-year allopathic medical school as an essential early phase development in the Medical District. The Medical District Master Plan also incorporates two key hospitals, Valley Hospital Medical Center and University Medical Center, the only level 1 trauma center in the state.

Las Vegas Medical District

As a district that is woven amongst the fabric of Las Vegas, spanning several miles and several hundred acres of urban and brownfield parcels, the plan emphasizes walkability, branded corridors, a dense core, and multi-modal linkages as part of the core concept.

SmithGroup's successful process was centered around extensive public engagement that relied on the use of accessible guiding principles that resonated with the community. Our multidisciplinary team approach helped bring often siloed stakeholders and interests into conversation and collaboration with one another.
