The Village of Lisle needed to bring visitors and commerce back to its struggling downtown. Local leaders engaged SmithGroupJJR to implement an ambitious vision of civic improvements for its Main Street, improving downtown character and fostering a unique sense of place.
The approach had two key goals: enhancing pedestrian safety and amenities to make Main Street more appealing, and giving physical expression to a new branding initiative dubbing Lisle the “Arboretum Village"—capitalizing on its existing Garden Walk and nearby Morton Arboretum.
Merging these ideas, SmithGroupJJR crafted a Prairie-style design with natural materials and an authentic, local feel. Distinctive medians, sidewalks and pocket parks use clay pavers and lush, indigenous plants drawn from Morton Arboretum.
Through extensive public meetings, SmithGroupJJR rallied community support for high-quality materials and details. A facade improvement program and business incentives were also added to the plan. The result is a rebranded, revitalized and wholly walkable Main Street teeming with new visitors and businesses.
