To advance cancer care and treatment options for six Michigan counties it serves, the McLaren Cancer Institute—already a cutting-edge research and clinical provider—elected to supply a home for the McLaren Proton Treatment Center (MPTC). SmithGroupJJR, jointly with RTKL, provided design and implementation services for the new facility, the first proton facility in Michigan, and one of only 12 in the entire U.S.
Where proton therapy once required expensive technology and building infrastructure the length of a football field, MPTC's treatment utilizes a compact synchrotron which is more economically feasible for smaller health systems. SmithGroupJJR’s experience in the implementation of cutting-edge technology allowed the owner to meet their aggressive technical, schedule and budget requirements.
With speed to market as the owner’s top priority, work began while the building criteria for this technology were still being developed. The accelerated schedule was made possible by bringing the construction management team on board at the project inception. The design, from programming through documents, was finished in nine months and construction condensed to 11 months—all while keeping the project on budget.
