With seven locations stretching across four eastern Nebraska counties, Metropolitan Community College (MCC) embarked on a major master plan update to address expanding enrollment and position itself for sustainable growth. In partnership with local engineers and architects, the SmithGroupJJR team brought a fresh national perspective combined with a keen understanding of local issues to MCC’s master planning process.
The plan emphasizes system-wide program migration in order to reduce facility redundancy and improve delivery of education. This approach enhances general education opportunities at all locations while creating several centers of specialization among MCC’s campuses. To help locate these specialized programs closer to where students reside, SmithGroupJJR utilized an innovative geographic information system (GIS) mapping platform to track MCC enrollment data. A local construction firm provided real-time cost information for the implementation plan, helping to establish defensible priorities and phasing.
