Oncology Center Renovation

Description

Following their work updating the master plan, SmithGroupJJR programmed, planned and designed this major renovation project—one of two to be constructed simultaneously within the fully operational Lucile Packard Children's Hospital—for the incorporation of a dedicated oncology center. The aggressive construction program was undertaken with extreme care and consideration.

The renovated space provides a new model for integrated delivery of oncology services to inpatients, outpatients, and day patients. Housing a 27-bed nursing unit for oncology and bone-marrow transplant, aiding medical staff in leveraging a continuum of skill sets across a full range of diagnosis and treatment modalities, the redesign of the hospital's first floor also accommodates a hematology unit, clinics and support space. The result is an international center of medical excellence.

In keeping with the client mission for patient care, the project design embraces the participation of the family. Each design element considers the family’s role and placement in treatment areas, helping to de-institutionalize the delivery of care in every way possible.
