When Sears decided to move several thousand employees from downtown Chicago to a new headquarters in Hoffman Estates, it presented an opportunity to redefine the traditional suburban office park. The company wanted its new facility to promote teamwork and a return to Sears' legacy as great merchants. SmtihGroupJJR responded with an inspiring site design that fosters employee interaction and promotes a mixed-use community in harmony with the natural prairie landscape.
Branded as Prairie Stone, the campus tucks naturally into the land. The design protects and enhances the site’s water courses, setting aside wetlands as beautiful natural features. It also incorporates large areas of parkland for stormwater management and recreational use. The stormwater design significantly improves water quality, while a network of walkways, seating areas and outdoor spaces encourage employees to connect with each other and their natural surroundings. Nearby are restaurants, retail, day care and more, all part of a vibrant mixed-use community linked by mass transit and pedestrian connections.
