To complete the student social spaces intended in its original design, Pomona College asked SmithGroupJJR to transform underused meeting rooms and other spaces into a cohesive, open and enjoyable lounge suite. The solution involved removing walls and opening up access from opposite ends of the building, creating a large, pub-like environment. Adding seating areas and basic services such as campus mail, the design team took the welcoming, event-ready space one step further, making it a new hub of the campus.
Students arrive at the Smith Campus Center to socialize, relax, and study in a setting designed to be approachable and youthful. The spaces are varied in atmosphere and amenities to suit a range of student needs. Groups can enjoy the living room with its ample daylight, dance space and outdoor terrace areas, or the central, multipurpose social room for musical performances and informal gatherings. In this way, the redesign of the Smith Campus Center supports multiple functions across the spectrum of campus life, from the energetic and the vibrant to the cool and sedate.
