Description

Creating new arts districts on university campuses is widely held as a model for both cultural and economic development. It also improves the student experience and enriches educational offerings. SmithGroupJJR builds on its deep experience in creating these rich cultural zones at this university's Arts Village, where the firm designed its memorable anchor, the Richmond Center for Visual Arts.

To extend the district concept, SmithGroupJJR renovated the art studios and learning spaces in South Kohrman Hall, which houses nationally distinguished arts programs including the Gwen Frostic School of Art. Yet the hall defers to its neighbor, the focal point of the Arts Village.

Recast as a modern, integrated home for the wide-ranging arts program, South Kohrman Hall celebrates the hands-on craft of creating art, preparing works and collaborating with fellow artists. Bright, functional studios greet students in ceramics, painting, photography, jewelry, sculpture and printmaking. Convenient access to dedicated student galleries, classrooms, critique spaces, and lecture halls complete this highly interactive new building layout.
