SmithGroup worked with the university to create the Visualize Temple Plan, a comprehensive master plan to address these issues and establish institutional priorities. In keeping with the institution’s self-made spirit, the planning process also engaged the entire campus community, including students, faculty, staff, administrators and alumni from Temple’s main campus and satellite locations.

As part of the master plan, SmithGroup led a team assessing space needs related to academic growth, student life and athletics. The team evaluated potential land acquisitions, as well, to allow future flexibility for the landlocked main campus. The plan also calls for identifying potential partnerships with public, community and private interests to leverage the economic resources and assets in greater Philadelphia.

In order to develop a plan, our team provided a detailed analysis of the utilization of classrooms and teaching laboratories for the campus. This was able to help the University understand what types of space would meet the University’s strategic goals and incorporated projected enrollment assumptions. Our team was also able to evaluate factor in how locations of classrooms impacted utilization.

To establish a dialogue with the university community, SmithGroup provided a website platform for discussing ideas and eliciting feedback. The campus community embraced it enthusiastically, with more than 12,000 visitors and over 3,000 active participants on the site, including current students, faculty, staff and Temple alumni. Along with focus groups and well-attended open houses, this unprecedented input helped define a positive consensus vision for Temple’s development.
